Yeah. I was recently tempted to update my own blog. (Horrors) So, I first decided to re-enable commenting. After more than a year since my last post, 9 months with comments completely disabled, I still got 50 spams in two days. So, I wrote my own captcha code. It sucks, but it’s better than registering, and most importantly, it seems to be working.

Your CAPTCHA works too well, sir! It swallowed three of my comments last week. Either that, or someone needs to get on the comment moderation stick. I’m not going to name names, but it’s you.

KJ, your use of Akismet led me directly to use their service for my WordPress install…

There have been two (2) spam comments that have gotten through since I’ve begun using them. I have nowhere near the volume of spam posts as kjtoo.com, however.

As to the installation of Akismet, I suppose you could look at it two ways: either I’ve indirectly helped you, or I’ve convinced you to toss your egg in our giant basket thus dooming you to drown in the spam flood (what is it with me and mixed metaphors?) caused by Akismet’s inevitable demise.

Oh, that’s right! I forgot that Rae’s blog does CAPTCHA (if you think the process is annoying, the acronym is worse: Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart) authentication. That would certainly explain the lack of spam comments.

Thanks for the link and I thought I’d just add that comment spam is NO indication of a blog’s popularity. Once they have found you through an incoming link, they belong to you.

On Sundays there seem to be spam views of my page (there is no way 124 people viewed my blog last sunday), but nothing infiltrates the text. Spot the fake computer geek…

You may have some built-in spam comment protection; that’s one potential benefit of using a hosted blog. I’ve had a LiveJournal account since late 2000 (I think) and I’ve never gotten a spam comment there, nor can I recall seeing spam comments in other peoples’ LJ accounts. Maybe it’s built-in protection or maybe spammers don’t like LiveJournal.

As for your increased numbers on Sunday, maybe that’s when the search engines come out to play.
