It’s actually “bated breath”. I believe “bated” is, in this case, short for “abated”, so the phrase means you’ve stopped breathing, not that you’ve been gnawing on nightcrawlers.

“Baited breath.” What the hell is that anyway? Someone ate worms while talking with someone else, thus gaining “baited breath?”

It’s actually “bated breath”. I believe “bated” is, in this case, short for “abated”, so the phrase means you’ve stopped breathing, not that you’ve been gnawing on nightcrawlers.
