The baler, from my recollection, deserved everything it got. No piece of equipment on the farm (perhaps on any farm) malfunctioned more often or more stubbornly than the machine that was supposed to turn a row of loose hay into a row of neat, round bales.

To a young child receiving a penny for every bale tied (all because we didn’t have a self-tying baler), every minute that contraption was out of order was money down the drain. Entire fortunes slipped through my fingers like lukewarm water while dad attempted to finagle, finesse and sometimes force the damn baler fulfil its sole purpose: spitting out bundles of cold, hard cash.
