minitotoro: Was the show "Charlie and Lola"? My kids love that one. I've watched it without them when they see a new one I missed (at least partly because otherwise I won't know what they're talking about).

We've some of the books as well (which they insist we read with the accents).

Alas, I have not had the chance to see most of Kyle's shows. I do however, love Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends, Courage the Cowardly Dog, Jakers!, and Avatar. (although most of these are probably a bit too big-kid-ish for Kyle's tastes). There was this one cartoon about a couple of British kids, a young girl and her older brother, that was just charming. However, I can't seem to recall the name of it. Oh and Steve is the TRUE Blue's Clues host. I cannot stand to watch Blue's Clues anymore with Joe. Very sad.

Allie -- I'm with Kris on this, although I have three kids so I'm not able to sit and watch with them as much as I'd like (to be honest sitting still for a bit is a nice break, so I take it when I can get it). I'm interested in knowing my children, and knowing what they like. I'm interested in other parent's takes on shows.

Also, of the shows listed, that's where the overlap was.

You'll want to stop reading now because I'm going to discuss kids TV again.

Kris -- I pointed out your comments to my wife Re: Max & Ruby. I don't know if it's related but the other day our two year old was watching it without the other kids and she laughed more than I'd ever heard her laugh before at the TV. Usually when her older sister isn't watching with her she smiles and stares, so it was nice.

I'm interested in what he's watching and we watch the shows together. When he sings the songs, I sing the songs. When he dances, I dance. When he helps Dora or Diego, I help, too. I enjoy being involved in the things my son likes because he is truly amazing.

We aren't just adults who talk about children's shows, we're parents who talk about children's shows.

Thanks for the comments.

Wow, your adults who discus childrens TV shows....
Do you have a life? I mean seriously!!
And this has distracted me from the amazingness that is art work.
Goodbye!

At first, I felt pretty much the same about Max and Ruby, until I realized that Max gets what he wants more often than he doesn't. Yes, Ruby certainly bosses him around a lot (my wife calls it "The Lexi and Vin Show", as the dynamic is almost identical to her niece and nephew), but whatever he wants ultimately proves to be what Ruby needs to accomplish her own goals.

Example: In "Ruby's Roller Skates", Ruby has brand new roller skates (and pads and a helmet) and she wants to roller skate to grandma's house. Max, on the other hand, wants to play tow truck. Ruby makes several attempts to find Max's tow truck (and, as is typical, he keeps repeating "tow truck!" throughout the episode), but can't, so she tries to get him to play with a variety of other toys. As Ruby learns that she's not terribly good at roller skating, Max comes to the rescue with his pedal car and Ruby's jump rope, towing Ruby to grandma's house. When grandma asks Ruby how she managed to learn to skate so quickly, Max triumphantly declares, "Tow truck!"

As for The Backyardigans, the subject hasn't come up yet. Kyle certainly knows how to pretend—he loves to play froggy with me, jumping around on the floor and yelling "Bibbit!", and he pretends to talk on the phone all the time—but we haven't extended the concept to what's happening on the television.

We can't watch Max and Ruby anymore in our house. Possibly due to the missing parents, Ruby seems like a queen with one subject (Max) in much the same way my oldest daughter thinks she should be the queen of her younger sisters.

I've never seen Max get to what he wants on that show ever, and no one ever stops Ruby from being a tyrant, which seems deliver the message to my kids that the older kid is in change in all things, and younger siblings are annoying pests who should just go away.

The Backyardagins are great. Does Kyle understand the concept they're just "playing pretend" in the back yard (which is a great message for a TV show)? My eldest thought I was crazy when I asked her about it.
