@Stanley — Fortunately, recent versions of WordPress/Akismet separate potential spam into three categories: comments, pingbacks and trackbacks. I really only care about the comments, but 90% or more of the spam is trackbacks, so I can just browse through the handful of comments Akismet grabs to check for false positives and ignore the hundreds of spammy trackbacks.

I have to agree with you, I love Askismet, but I didnt know that some real comments sometimes get marked as spam. I went back and looked threw some spam comments and found a real comment stuck in the purgatory of Askismet spam. I will have to monitor everything closely.

@Greg — Now that’s something I wish I understood: what it is about certain posts that attract spammers like flies to rotting meat. Actually, that’s a bad analogy, isn’t it? I mean, I have no problem comparing spammers to flies, but I hope my old blog posts aren’t anything like rotting meat.

I seem to have (at least for now) solved my longstanding comment spam issue by disabling commenting on the relatively few blog entries that get bombarded to all but commenters with whitelisted URLs.

@Greg — if I had your mad programming skillz, I might be tempted to write my own blogging platform, but I’m lucky if I can slog through the PHP and JavaScript of a plugin to tweak it to my liking.

Alex King’s Delink Comment Author plug-in allows you to easily remove the author link from a specific comment for cases where there’s nothing wrong with the comment per-say.

Some of us don’t have fancy Akismets to catch our spam for us. Back in my day, we deleted the spam comments manually, and we LIKED it!

Honestly though, I sometimes wish I was using Wordpress.
